Understanding the Oxygen RX Facial Benefits Explained by a Skin Nurse

A client booked an Oxygen RX facial with me last month because her sister had told her it was "the best facial she'd ever had." She came in confused. She didn't know what oxygen actually does for skin, why it was different from a regular facial, or whether it would work for her skin type. By the time she left, she understood the science, the ingredients, and why I keep this particular treatment in my facial menu after eight years of trying just about every facial system on the market.
If you're in the same position, this guide will explain exactly what the Oxygen RX facial is, who it's actually suited for, what happens during the treatment, and what results to realistically expect. I've added the FAQs my clients ask most often at the bottom.
This isn't a marketing piece. It's the breakdown I give clients in their consultation, written out in detail so you can make an informed decision before you book anything.
What is the Oxygen RX facial, in plain English?
The Oxygen RX facial is a professional skin treatment that creates a controlled chemical reaction on the surface of your skin, releasing pure oxygen directly into the dermal layers. It's part of the Circadia skincare system, which I use in my facial menu because the science behind it is solid and the results are consistent across most skin types.
Here's how it works mechanically. A gel base and an activating powder are mixed fresh on your skin during the treatment. When the two ingredients combine, they produce a controlled oxygen reaction that bubbles gently on the skin surface. The oxygen is then driven down into the skin where it does its actual work.
That work involves three things. First, the oxygen is antibacterial, which means it kills the bacteria that contribute to acne, congestion, and inflammation. Second, it triggers fibroblast stimulation, which kicks your collagen and elastin production into a higher gear. Third, it has an anti-inflammatory effect that calms redness, sensitivity, and rosacea-prone skin.
The Oxygen RX is different from "oxygen facials" you might have seen at spas where oxygen is sprayed onto the surface of the skin through a tube. Those treatments are mostly cosmetic and don't deliver oxygen into the skin itself. The Circadia system creates the oxygen on the skin so it actually penetrates and works.
Who is the Oxygen RX facial actually for?
In my experience treating clients in Fairfield and across Melbourne's inner north, the Oxygen RX facial works particularly well for five specific concerns.
Acne and breakout-prone skin. This is the most common reason clients book it. Oxygen kills the anaerobic bacteria (P. acnes) that thrive in clogged pores and cause inflammatory acne. Most clients see a noticeable reduction in active breakouts after one treatment, with significant improvement over a course of 4 to 6 weekly sessions. If acne is your specific concern, I've written separately about the science behind Circadia Oxygen RX for acne.
Rosacea and persistent redness. Oxygen is anti-inflammatory and antibacterial against demodex (a common skin mite linked to rosacea). The treatment calms the redness without aggravating sensitive skin, which is the difficult balance that most rosacea facials get wrong.
Dull, tired skin. If your skin looks flat in photos or feels lifeless despite a decent skincare routine, oxygen brightens it almost immediately. The fibroblast stimulation also improves skin texture over time, so this isn't just a one-off glow.
Sensitive or reactive skin. Most facial treatments rely on acids, peels, or aggressive exfoliation. The Oxygen RX uses a gentle chemical reaction that calms rather than irritates, making it one of the few professional facials suitable for genuinely sensitive skin.
Pre-event prep. This treatment is the textbook "lunchtime facial." The full session takes 45 minutes, there's no downtime, and you walk out with visibly brighter skin. I have clients who book it specifically before weddings, photoshoots, or important events.
Who isn't a good candidate? Anyone with an active cold sore, very recent injectable treatment (within 2 weeks), open skin lesions, or certain medical conditions like uncontrolled diabetes. We work through this in your consultation before booking.
What happens during the treatment
Your first Oxygen RX appointment at ReflectorN takes about 45 minutes. Here's what happens, step by step.
Cleansing. I do a double cleanse with appropriate products for your skin type. This removes any makeup, sunscreen, oil, and impurities so the treatment can work properly.
Skin analysis. I assess your skin under proper lighting to confirm the treatment is right for you that day, check for any changes since your consultation, and adjust the protocol if needed.
Enzyme prep (optional). For some clients I'll use a cocoa enzyme treatment first to gently exfoliate and prepare the skin. This isn't always included, depending on how recently you've had other treatments.
The oxygen activation. This is the main event. I mix the gel base and activating powder on your skin, and you'll feel a gentle warming and tingling sensation as the chemical reaction releases oxygen. The product foams up gently. It's relaxing, not painful, and most clients describe it as the most enjoyable part of the treatment.
Mask application. A finishing mask is applied to seal in the active ingredients and provide additional hydration.
Serum and SPF. I finish with a targeted serum based on your skin concerns, followed by a broad-spectrum SPF before you leave.
No needles, no aggressive exfoliation, no downtime. You can return to work, makeup goes on within an hour, and you can do anything you'd normally do.
What results can you actually expect?
Let me be honest about what to expect, because the marketing language around oxygen facials gets overblown sometimes.
After your first treatment: Visible immediate glow. Skin looks brighter and feels smoother. If you had inflammation or redness, you'll notice it calmed down. If you had active breakouts, they'll often look smaller and less angry the next morning. The skin feels firmer and more hydrated.
After 3-4 treatments (acne or rosacea concerns): Active acne should be reducing noticeably. Redness should be more controlled. Skin texture starts improving more permanently as collagen production kicks in.
After 6 weekly treatments: This is the recommended course for serious skin concerns. You should see substantial improvement in whatever you came in to treat — clearer acne, calmer rosacea, brighter and firmer skin. From here, most clients move to monthly maintenance treatments.
For maintenance or general skin health: Many of my clients who don't have specific concerns book the Oxygen RX every 4 to 6 weeks just to keep their skin in great condition. This is also a very common pattern.
You won't see a permanent transformation from one session. You'll see an immediate brightening and softening, but the deeper benefits build with repeated treatments.
How does the Oxygen RX compare to other facials?
This is a question I get asked constantly, so let me put the Oxygen RX into context.
vs. Hydrating or oxygen-spray facials: Most "oxygen facials" use a stream of pressurized oxygen and serums on the skin surface. They feel nice and provide temporary hydration, but they don't penetrate or stimulate the skin like the Oxygen RX does.
vs. Chemical peels: Peels remove the top layer of skin to force regeneration. They work, but they cause downtime, sensitivity, and aren't suitable for everyone. Oxygen RX gives you many of the brightening benefits without removing skin or causing downtime.
vs. HydraFacials: HydraFacial focuses on deep cleansing and infusion. It's great for congestion but doesn't have the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects of oxygen. They're different treatments for different goals.
vs. Microneedling: Microneedling creates micro-channels to trigger collagen. It's effective for scarring and deep textural concerns but requires downtime. Oxygen RX is gentler and better for inflammatory skin conditions.
vs. LED therapy: LED uses light wavelengths to stimulate the skin. Often combined with the Oxygen RX in fact, because they work well together. We can discuss combining treatments during your consultation.
I offer a full range of facial treatments at ReflectorN so you can choose what suits your skin best. For some clients, the Oxygen RX is the right answer. For others, a different facial or combination treatment works better. The honest assessment matters more than just picking what sounds good.
Why I use Circadia in particular
There are several professional oxygen facial systems on the market. I chose Circadia after testing multiple options because of how the brand approaches skincare formulation.
Circadia is built around the body's natural circadian rhythm. The brand was founded by Dr. Peter Pugliese, a skin researcher who studied how skin behaves at different times of day. The Oxygen RX uses ingredients chosen specifically for their bioavailability and how they interact with the skin's natural repair cycle.
The other factor is consistency. After eight years of using Circadia products, I see consistent results across different skin types. Some skincare brands work brilliantly for certain skin types and poorly for others. The Oxygen RX is one of the most universally tolerated professional treatments I've used.
I'm a certified Circadia provider, which means I've completed formal training in the protocols and can administer the treatments safely and effectively. Not every clinic offering "oxygen facials" uses an actual professional system — some are using basic spa equipment under the same name.
How often should you book the Oxygen RX?
This depends on what you're treating.
For active skin concerns (acne, rosacea, persistent inflammation): Weekly for the first 4 to 6 weeks, then monthly maintenance.
For general skin health and glow: Once every 4 to 6 weeks.
For pre-event prep: Book 5 to 7 days before your event. Not the day before — give your skin time to settle into its best state.
Maintenance after a complete course: Monthly or every 6 weeks depending on your skin and lifestyle.
I'll discuss the right schedule for you during your consultation. There's no point booking weekly treatments if you don't need them, and equally no point doing monthly if your skin needs the intensive 6-week course to actually shift something.
Is the Oxygen RX facial painful?
No. Most clients describe it as relaxing. You'll feel a warm tingling sensation when the oxygen is activated, but there's no pain, no needles, and no harsh exfoliation.
Can I wear makeup after the Oxygen RX facial?
Yes, after about an hour. I generally recommend giving your skin a few hours to absorb the products before applying makeup, but there's no medical reason you can't wear it the same day.
How is the Oxygen RX different from a regular facial?
Most "facials" are essentially deep cleanses with some hydrating products and a relaxing massage. The Oxygen RX is a clinical treatment with a specific active mechanism (oxygen reaction on the skin) that addresses bacterial, inflammatory, and aging concerns at a deeper level than a basic facial can.
How much does the Oxygen RX cost?
I'd prefer to discuss pricing in person because it depends on whether you're booking a single treatment, a course, or combining with other treatments like LED therapy. Book a consultation and we'll go through it.
Can I have the Oxygen RX if I have sensitive skin?
Yes. This is actually one of the best professional facials for sensitive skin because the oxygen is anti-inflammatory and the products are gentle. I've used it successfully on rosacea-prone, reactive, and post-treatment sensitive skin.
Can I combine the Oxygen RX with cosmetic injectables?
Yes, but timing matters. I recommend waiting two weeks after any injectable treatment (lip filler, anti-wrinkle, bio-remodelling) before having a facial, to let the injectable settle properly. After that, the treatments are very complementary.
Is the Oxygen RX safe during pregnancy?
Most components of the Oxygen RX are pregnancy-safe, but I always ask my pregnant clients to check with their treating doctor or obstetrician before booking any professional skin treatment. I'll adjust the protocol if there's any concern.
Will I see immediate results?
Yes. You'll walk out with visibly brighter, smoother, calmer skin. The longer-term benefits (collagen stimulation, reduced acne over time, sustained rosacea control) develop over multiple treatments.
Ready to find out if the Oxygen RX is right for your skin?
Every consultation at ReflectorN is complimentary. We'll talk through your skin concerns, assess your current condition, and figure out whether the Oxygen RX is the right answer or whether another treatment would suit you better.
I don't book treatments people don't need. If your concern is better suited to a different facial, bio-remodelling, or something else entirely, I'll tell you straight.
